My Thoughts

Thank you Pan Macmillan Australia who sent me a copy of Moon Chosen to review!

“I knew it was true.  You do have my powers and more.”

Moon Chosen follows a multiple characters. Mari, an Earth Walker, daughter and heir to the Moon Woman, leader of the clan. Nik, son of the leader from The Companions, Mari’s rival clan and Dead Eye from the Skin Stealers. I found the concept of this book extremely interesting! The men in the Earth Walker clan get extremely violent and women get extremely depressed unless the moon women cleanses them. The Companions clan have pups that chose them and become connected together for life.

Mari has inherited the abilities of the Moon Women but struggles with her life and place in her clan. She has spent most of her life hiding her true self from the clan as her father was from the rival clan of Companions and if they found out, her mother and her would be exiled. When a pup from the Companions find its way to Mari, it sets off a chain of events that will lead her on a journey to not just save her own clan, but her world.

Nik has spent his life waiting for a pup to choose him, but is yet to have one. When he becomes attached to a pup and it then goes missing, he vows to find it and bring it home. His search for the pup leads him straight to the Earth Walkers where he meets Mari, an Earth Walker like he has never seen before. He has been taught that Earth Walker women are like children who can’t look after themselves and are always sad and to always send them to the island. The island hold Earth Walker Women that the Companions have captured. But Mari is lively and fierce, something Nik never thought he would see. When he learns Mari has healing powers he knows he has to persuade her tell him her ways to save his clan from their mysterious disease.

Although I enjoyed the book, I found it quite slow at times and it took me a while to get into it. A lot of the book was the backstory of each clan and the world the story is based. Don’t get me wrong, learning about the world was interesting but I feel like there was lot of it. There was also a lot of running through the forest searching for things or people which bored me a bit at times. But I loved the characters so it made up for the slow bits. I loved seeing friendships grow between enemies and how they all interacted with each other. I absolutely loved the concepts of the Earth Walker and Companion clans. I found them both so interesting. I also found it really interesting how the world was kind of back to the basics. There was no technology which I think made the story more intriguing.

I feel like overall the book went for a bit too long. I think the author could have skipped a lot of stuff and been more to the point. With that said I really enjoyed reading all about this world and can’t wait to see what the next book will hold!
